Why won’t my Babetta shift into second?

  1. The shift shoes are contaminated with oil

  2. The lining on the shift shoes is worn out

  3. The drivers aren’t spreading the shift shoes correctly

Fixes

1) Shift shoes are contaminated with oil

Clean the shift shoes and the second-gear drum with a solvent (e.g., brake cleaner) and lightly sand/scuff them.

2) Shift-shoe lining is worn

Diagnosis: with the shoes pressed by hand, there’s a gap of roughly > 3 mm between the drum and the shoe.

Remedies:

  • New shoes are commonly sold, but aftermarket quality isn’t always sufficient.

  • Specialized shops can reline the shoes.

3) Drivers don’t spread the shift shoes properly

If none of the above solves the issue, you can replace the drivers/actuators with new ones.
